John Wilmshurst has over 20 years of experience as a guitar tutor, having taught professionally in schools, colleges, and privately to hundreds of students. He served as an examiner for the Registry of Guitar Tutors (London College of Music) and, before relocating to Sydney in 2013, owned two studios, including the premier guitar tuition service in East London Docklands.
John’s passion for music and teaching is evident, along with his firm belief that anyone can learn. His expertise has been recognised in multiple publications, and he has made appearances on both radio and television.
With extensive experience teaching students of all ages and levels, from complete beginners to degree-level musicians, John was among the first in the UK to specialize in workshops for those with special educational needs. He holds various teaching accreditations and has completed first-aid training.
John was a ‘first call lead tutor’ for Essex, Suffolk, and Tower Hamlets London county councils. For the past six years, he has also been teaching online via Skype to students worldwide and continues to mentor long-term students in the UK, some of whom have been with him since 2008.
As well as teaching, John has toured and played professionally throughout the UK and Europe, performing over 250 nights a year for 12 years and is an official Rotosound string endorsee.
His first online guitar course aimed at complete beginners called ‘Guitar for Starters’ will be available during 2024.
John currently teaches limited spaces to students of all ages from 6 to 60 in the Sydney Upper North Shore area from beginner to advanced. He has a six month waiting list.
